HEALTH OVERVIEW
The Markiesje is generally a healthy breed, but like all dogs, they can be prone to certain conditions. Responsible breeding practices and regular veterinary check-ups are essential to maintain their health and well-being. Below are the main health concerns to be aware of:

01
PATELLA LUXATION
Patella luxation is a condition where the kneecap (patella) moves out of its normal position. This can cause varying degrees of lameness and discomfort. Regular veterinary examinations can help detect this condition early. In Markiesjes this can be hereditary, but it can also result from accidents such as falls or slipping. In more severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary.
02
PROGRESSIVE RETINAL ATROPHY
PRA-prcd is a genetic eye disorder that leads to progressive vision loss and eventually blindness. Thanks to rigorous breeding policies, the risk of puppies being born with PRA-prcd has been effectively minimized. Regular eye examinations following European College of Veterinarian Ophthalmologists (ECVO) guidelines are crucial to monitor and manage this condition.

03
PAROXYSMAL DYSKINESIA
Paroxysmal Dyskinesia is a neurological disorder characterized by sudden, involuntary movements. A specific mutation responsible for neuropathy in the Markiesje was identified in 2017. Through careful breeding practices, this condition has been significantly reduced within the breed.
